You are minding your own business, driving down the highway when suddenly – *Smash!
A rock, seemingly out of nowhere, kicked up from the tire of a big truck in front of you hits your windshield. Your beautiful crystal clear windshield now has a lovely cracked starburst dead center impending your vision and making driving illegal.
What do you do?
This is not how you wanted your day to go. It is time to check your policy and call your insurance company directly before going to anyone for glass repair.
Why can’t I just call a repair company directly?
Repair companies often require you to sign an assignment of benefits which allows them to collect payment directly from your insurer. By signing an AOB you could lose control over the claims process as well as any warranties you may be granted by your insurer.
if asked to sign an AOB you could very well end up paying for more than what is covered in your policy. It is best to err on the side of caution when it comes to businesses handing out flyers door to door or at other places around town and never allow anyone to pressure you into a quick decision.
Do not give the technician your insurance card so that they can report the claim for you. The claim is best to remain with you and your insurance company. Read everything before you sign and be wary of anyone claiming to work under the table to save you money. While it may save you money up front, if anything is wrong with the work or the windshield it will not be covered.
If you have a cracked windshield it will be covered under your auto policy. Just call the insurance carrier directly and let them know what happened. They will then be able to direct you as to what steps to take next.
