PIPIf it has been a significant amount of time since you have been involved in an accident there are some things that have changed since new legislation was passed in 2013.

You now have only 14 days to seek medical care following a crash. The legislation now requires that you be seen by a medical doctor who is certified in auto injury. This is not your primary care physician and although your chiropractic care is covered you must be examined by the medical doctor additionally or the insurance company does not have to legally pay your PIP (personal injury protection) claim.

Massage is no longer covered under PIP. Despite the fact that it has been scientifically proven over and over again that this modality of therapy speeds healing after an accident. In order to receive massage therapy, you have to either pay out of pocket or if you have an attorney work it out with the attorney and the medical massage therapists office that they are to be compensated at the time the case is settled.

Make sure you select your coverages wisely on your auto policy. There is more than one kind of deductible and more than one option for medical payments. When you look at your policy, you have to select your deductible (this is the one most people think of and are aware of) for collision/comprehensive. This deductible is what you will be responsible to pay out of pocket should an accident occur in order to fix your vehicle. Comprehensive and collision deductible limits can be selected separately and do not have to match.

The second deductible is the Personal Injury Protection deductible. This is what you will be paying out of pocket to the doctor’s offices before the mandatory $10,000 Florida state limit kicks in.

Along with both of these, you have optional coverages which you may or may not elect in order to boost the amount you have towards medical coverage from your own insurance company in the event of an accident. This amount is chosen and can go anywhere from $1,000 all the way up to $100,000. Each incremental raise will also raise your monthly payment rate.

Knowing what is included in your policy is important. If you have an accident it is then too late to make adjustments and you are held to what was previously already in place. Talk with us today.
